THE THREE NOTES OF A PERFUME

September 05 2018

Fragrance notes are much like musical notes that give the different intensity of smell to the perfume. The fragrance notes are necessary to make a perfume. Overall, there are three note scales that when combined together to create the perfume's fragrant accord. All the three levels, however, have their own primary purpose.

The Top Notes

Top notes are mostly referred to as the opening notes or head notes in which the top notes of a fragrance are generally the lightest of all the notes. While the application of the perfume, these top notes are recognized immediately. Given their light molecular structure, the top notes are also the first one to fade but this does not mean they aren't important. The scent of the top notes is sharp and striking which is very important in selling the product.

The Middle Notes

Once after the top notes evaporate, the middle notes, or the heart notes, make an appearance. The middle notes are primarily considered as the heart of the fragrance. They last longer than the top notes as the scents from this note appear anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes from the Top Note. This Note also has a strong influence on the base notes to come. The heart of the perfume is generally pleasant and well-rounded. Most often it is a smooth combination of fruit or floral tones; sometimes filled with spices like cardamom, cinnamon or nutmeg.

The Base Notes

Final fragrance notes of the perfume are the base notes that appear once the top notes are completely evaporated. The Base Notes are typically associated with the dry-down period of the perfume. The main job of the base notes is for providing the lasting impression of the scent mainly 1-2 hour from application of perfume.

Without the combination of the three levels of notes, a fragrance will not be aromatically appealing. But together with these three notes, they create beautiful scents.
